Summer is here and we are spending more time outdoors. Just as we protect our skin, it is important to protect the eyes from the UV rays of the sun.
When I worked in an office located one block from the beach I saw a lot red, inflamed eyes from too much fun in the sun . Reduce your risk of acute damage by using sun glassses with UV A and UV B protection as well as wide brimmed hats.
The redness and inflammation usually improves with proper treatment but there are long term effects of UV exposure. These include cataract, macular degeneration, and growths on the front of the eye known as ptyerigium or penguecula. Fortunately the last two conditions are largely cosmetic and rarely causing decreased vison. However, cataract and macular degeneration can seriously impact how well you see.
Prevention is always best. So be sure to use proper sun protection so you see well for a life time.
